Throat Chakra Blocked? Why You Can't Speak Up (And How to Fix It)
Part of the Chakra Balancing in Taipei series.
The throat chakra (Vishuddha) governs your ability to express what’s true for you — your needs, opinions, and boundaries. It’s one of the most commonly blocked chakras among professionals in Taipei, and one of the clearest to recognise once you know what to look for.
| Sanskrit name | Vishuddha |
| Location | Throat |
| Element | Sound / Ether |
| Governs | Communication, honesty, self-expression |
Signs Your Throat Chakra Is Blocked
- Staying quiet in meetings even when you disagree
- Rehearsing what you want to say and then not saying it
- A literal tightness or lump-in-throat feeling when trying to speak up
- Resentment that builds from unexpressed needs or opinions
- Difficulty setting verbal boundaries, even in low-stakes situations
Why It’s So Common in Taipei’s Workplace Culture
A professional culture that values harmony, hierarchy, and not rocking the boat — common across many Taipei workplaces — can be wonderful for team cohesion and brutal for the throat chakra specifically. Years of holding back a differing opinion to keep the peace trains the body to associate speaking up with danger, even in situations where speaking up would actually be welcomed. This is one of the most frequent patterns clients bring in, often without realising it has a name.
Signs It’s Overactive
An overactive throat chakra can look like talking over others, dominating conversations, or being unable to stop talking even when it’s not landing well — expression without much listening.
How to Start Clearing It
- Low-stakes speaking reps — practice voicing a small, low-risk opinion (what restaurant to pick, which film to watch) purely to rebuild the muscle
- Humming or chanting — literal vibration in the throat is a traditional throat chakra practice and has an immediate physical effect on tension in that area
- Blue visualisation — traditionally the throat chakra’s colour; picture a clear blue light at the base of your throat during meditation
- Writing the unsaid thing — if you can’t say it yet, write exactly what you’d say if you could; this alone often reduces the internal pressure

When to Consider a Session
If holding back has become such a long-standing habit that you’re not sure how to break it alone, a guided session can help loosen the pattern at a nervous-system level rather than just a willpower level. Book a session with a throat chakra focus.
