What is Reiki and how does it work?

Reiki is a gentle energy healing practice that helps bring the body, mind, and emotions back into balance. The word “Reiki” comes from Japanese words that can be understood as “universal life force energy” — the natural energy that flows through all living beings.

Reiki is based on the idea that when this energy flows freely, we tend to feel more calm, clear, healthy, and emotionally balanced. But when stress, emotional pain, trauma, anxiety, or exhaustion build up over time, this energy can begin to feel blocked or heavy, affecting how we feel mentally, emotionally, and even physically.

Reiki is not a religion, and you do not need to follow any spiritual belief system for it to work. You also do not need to “believe” in Reiki to receive its benefits. Many people come to Reiki simply because they feel emotionally overwhelmed, mentally exhausted, energetically drained, or disconnected from themselves. Reiki creates a safe and peaceful space for the body and mind to soften, release stress, and reconnect with a sense of inner calm.

Reiki is also commonly connected with chakra healing because chakras are believed to be energy centres within the body. When these energy centres become imbalanced due to emotional or physical stress, it can affect our overall wellbeing. Reiki helps support the flow of energy through these centres, encouraging grounding, emotional balance, clarity, and relaxation.

Rather than forcing healing, Reiki works by supporting the body’s own natural healing intelligence. It is a practice of slowing down, listening inward, and allowing yourself to receive rest, care, and energetic support. In a world where many people constantly carry stress, emotional pressure, and mental noise, Reiki offers a moment to pause, breathe, and reconnect with yourself in a gentle and meaningful way.

What we believe

The philosophy behind Reiki

Six quiet principles that shape how the work is held.

  1. The body stores emotions

Feelings we never have time to fully experience don’t simply disappear — they settle into the tissues. Tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, a heavy chest are all the body’s way of holding what the mind couldn’t process at the time.

  2. Energy affects emotional & physical wellbeing

When the body’s energy moves freely, we feel like ourselves. When it’s stuck, depleted, or overactive, that imbalance shows up as overwhelm, fatigue, anxiety, pain, or a quiet sense that something is off.

  3. Healing begins with awareness and safety

Nothing truly shifts in a body that feels watched, judged, or rushed. Reiki creates a held space first — quiet, warm, unhurried — so the nervous system can begin to let down its guard.

  4. Rest is healing

Rest is not the absence of work; it is the work. The deepest healing happens when we stop pushing, allowing the body and mind to integrate, repair, and reset.

  5. The nervous system needs regulation

Chronic stress keeps the nervous system in a low hum of "on" that never quite turns off. Reiki acts as a co-regulator — gently signalling safety to the body so the system can drop into a healing state.

  6. Reiki supports the body’s natural healing intelligence

Reiki does not fix or override; it supports. The body already knows how to heal. The practice creates the conditions in which that intelligence can do its quiet, steady work.
