Root Chakra Blocked? Signs and How to Ground Yourself

Part of the Chakra Balancing in Taipei series.

The root chakra (Muladhara) sits at the base of your spine and governs the most basic layer of your wellbeing: safety, stability, and whether your nervous system believes your basic needs are met. When it’s blocked, everything built on top of it — confidence, creativity, connection — tends to feel shakier too.

Signs Your Root Chakra Is Blocked

  • Chronic low-level anxiety, even when nothing is visibly wrong
  • Feeling financially insecure regardless of actual income
  • Trouble committing to decisions — home, job, relationship
  • A restless, ungrounded feeling, like you’re never quite settled
  • Physical tension in the lower back, hips, or legs

Why It’s Common in Taipei

Root chakra imbalance shows up constantly among expats and newer residents in Taipei — unfamiliar systems, a language barrier, distance from family, and the general instability of building a life from scratch all hit directly at “am I safe and stable here.” But it’s just as common in long-term local residents dealing with job insecurity, housing costs, or family financial pressure. If your stress feels less like “I’m overwhelmed” and more like “the ground under me feels unstable,” this is usually the chakra to start with.

Signs It’s Overactive

An overactive root chakra can look like rigidity, hoarding, or excessive control-seeking — over-planning every detail of your finances or environment out of fear rather than genuine preparedness.

How to Start Grounding It

  • Barefoot contact with earth — even a few minutes standing on grass at Da’an Forest Park or any green space has a real, immediate grounding effect
  • Root-focused breathwork — slow, low, belly-deep breathing rather than shallow chest breathing signals safety to the nervous system
  • Physical repetition — walking, weightlifting, or any rhythmic movement that keeps your attention in your legs and feet
  • Red visualisation — traditionally associated with the root chakra; some clients find visualising a steady red light at the base of the spine during meditation genuinely calming

When to Consider a Session

If grounding practices help temporarily but the anxious, unstable feeling keeps returning, that’s usually a sign the blockage is deeper than a daily habit can shift on its own — grief, past instability, or long-held fear often live in the root chakra and respond well to focused hands-on work. Book a chakra balancing session at the Xinyi studio, with the root chakra as the specific focus.

Not sure the root chakra is actually your issue? Take the 2-minute quiz or continue on to the sacral chakra, which governs the layer just above it — creativity and emotional flow.
